Top 10 Benefits of Podcast Guesting
Do you create content on the platform where you enjoy spending the most time?
This is probably why I don’t tweet, TikTok, do Reels, post personal stories on IG, or create videos. I only watch videos once they have gone SUPER viral, like the skateboarding guy with the Fleetwood Mac song.
I do, however, post on LinkedIn. I like it here. Maybe because 99% of the people here are lurkers, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.
I just finished a podcast series for Your Expert Guest and it wasn’t horrible. Which makes sense, because I love listening to podcasts and have since I discovered WTF with Marc Maron in 2009.
One of the ways we help our clients get visibility is booking them as guests on podcasts. The benefits of this marketing strategy are plentiful, so I thought I’d share my top 10 favorites with you.
1. You don’t have to spend hours on social media. It’s so easy to get sucked into hours online when all you meant to do was answer a quick question or comment on a post. You get to have a 30-45 minute conversation, on something that you love to talk about and boom, you’re done until the episode goes live.
2. You have your audience’s attention. Unlike social media, where you have seconds to spare before they scroll on by; 80% of podcast listeners will listen to all or most of the episode, according to Podcast Insights. With many of the interview style format shows clocking in at 30-45 minutes, that is some serious quality time.
3 Establish your thought leadership. You may already be doing this with a book, speaking engagements or other content, but podcast interviews are the gift that keeps on giving because of……see #4
4. Evergreen marketing. I know many podcast guests (myself included) who were on a show years ago that they still get leads and new clients from!!!! I repeat, an episode that they recorded in the past, that took an hour, is still sending them new business. Hello passive marketing.
5. Grow your referral network. If your business is referral driven, the connections you make with podcast hosts are gold. With every interview, you grow your network of people who know, like and trust you.
6. Get more visibility for your own podcast. We podcast listeners are not monogamous, we love learning about new podcasts. Guesting on other shows is great exposure for your podcast to potential new listeners.
7. Leads to greater visibility opportunities: For one of our clients, she received an invitation to be on another, larger, podcast after her very first interview. Guesting has a snowball effect, the more you guest, the more podcast invites, speaking engagements, and collaboration opportunities come your way.
8. Credibility – Add your podcast interviews to your Press page on your website and watch your street cred skyrocket. P.S. Podcast hosts appreciate the SEO juice when you link the episode back to their website.
9. SEO benefits with minimal effort. The SEO benefits of podcast guesting could be a newsletter on its own, so I’ll keep this one high level. If you are guesting on podcasts that publish show notes they’ll backlink to your site. Google rewards sites with more backlinks with a higher SEO ranking.
10. Sales and leads. One of our clients reported the 80% of her new clients came from podcast guesting in her first year. While selling on a show is a hard no, if you guest on podcasts that your ideal clients listen to and you provide information that really helps them, that’s the recipe to growing your email list, booking discovery calls and generating sales.
Conclusion
The reasons for podcast guesting as a marketing strategy are plentiful. I’d love to hear what questions you have about podcast guesting or if you have found ways that it benefits your business that weren’t mentioned.
